Fats & Oils

It is useful to know that coconut oil, palm oil and olive oil or vegetable shortening (hydrogenated coconut oil, commonly known as copha, or hydrogenated palm oil) are good to use as your main oil or fat component in the saponification process as they saponify readily to give you a hard soap which lathers well.

Other vegetable oils and fats (such as apricot kernal, sweet almond, jojoba, evening prinrose, wheatgerm, avocado, shea butter and cocoa butter) which do not allow a solid soap to form, can be added to 'super-fat' the soap and are used for their emolient properties.
